The NPL competition began on 17 February, with the men's State League 1 and State League 2 competitions beginning on 18 February. The WNPL and Women's State League competitions began 10 March.[1][2]

Background

For the first time since 2013, and the inception of the National Premier Leagues, the format for the finals series was altered. As opposed to a McIntyre system, all 3 men's leagues have adopted the same format as the A-League Men, using a 6 team knockout, with the top two teams from the regular season receiving a bye to the second week.[3]

Croydon FC and Sturt Lions entered teams in the Women's State League, expanding the competition to 10 teams, and bringing the total number of women's teams up to 20. In addition to the State League expansion, the WNPL and WSL teams will also compete in a pre-season cup.[4]

Croydon FC returned to their home ground, after being forced out of Polonia Reserve by upgrades to South Road by the South Australian government. West Adelaide is expected to move to their new home ground in Kilburn once it has completed construction.

Football South Australia will broadcast two games a week on Channel 44, a South Australian community television channel, one men's game and one women's game. The broadcast was softlaunched the previous year, with the NPL SA Grand Final and WNPL SA Grand Final being televised.[5] In addition, all NPL, WNPL and State League 1 games will continue to be broadcast on NPL.TV after Football South Australia joined the platform ahead of the 2021 season.[6]
