Auditions

The Idol Across America virtual auditions program returned from the previous two seasons. The remote auditions took place from August 3 to September 14, 2022, as well as a number of open-call auditions, and from these the producers selected the contestants who then auditioned for the judges.[4]

The "platinum ticket" returned from last season. During the audition round a total of three platinum tickets were awarded, giving the recipients the opportunity to advance directly to the second round of Hollywood Week and pick their partners for that week's Duet Challenge, before the remaining contestants are paired. During the American Music Awards, three contestants advancing to Hollywood Week were given the opportunity to win a fourth platinum ticket. The recipients were Tyson Venegas, Kaylin Hedges, Cam Amen, and Elijah McCormick.[5][6][7][8]

Hollywood Week

Hollywood Week was filmed December 4–7, 2022, at the Los Angeles Theatre in Los Angeles. The Genre Challenge was replaced with the Performance Challenge which consists of three categories: "Confidence", "Songwriting" and "Stage Presence".[9] Contestants chose the category for the challenge and were each mentored by two former Idol alumni in a category. The Confidence group was mentored by Clay Aiken and David Archuleta, Catie Turner and Phillip Phillips coached Songwriting, and Stage Presence was taught by Jordin Sparks and Justin Guarini. After all the contestants in their respective groups performed, the judges brought them to the stage and made their decisions.[10] Those who advanced moved onto the Duet Challenge. After the platinum ticket holders chose their duet partners, the judges paired the remaining contestants. The duets were given twelve hours to rehearse, which included a consultation with a vocal coach, a stage rehearsal, and a session for advice from one of the judges. Those who passed the Duet Challenge advanced to the Showstopper Round.[11]

Showstopper round

The Showstopper round was filmed December 11, 2022, featuring the top fifty-five (thirty-five aired) performing for the judges and a live audience at the Los Angeles Theatre. The following day, the judges narrowed the number of contestants down to twenty-six in the Final Judgment. The following is a list of the contestants who performed, the song they performed at the Showstopper, and if they advanced or not.
