Matthar, sometimes called Matt,[2] is a recruit of the Night's Watch.
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Matthar is in the same class of recruits as Jon Snow. When he learns he is to join the Night's Watch, he celebrates with Jon and the others, drinking wine and throwing snowballs. He is named to the rangers when he is considered ready to man the Wall.[2]
Matthar is present when Jon Snow reveals his new sword Longclaw to his friends.[3] When Lord Eddard Stark is executed, Matthar asks Septon Cellador to light a candle for him.[4] He is among the group of friends who stop Jon from abandoning the Night's Watch and forswearing himself.[5]
A Feast for Crows
Matthar is stationed at Castle Black.[6]
