Khal is a title that the Dothraki use to designate the leader of a khalasar, the nomadic groupings upon which their society is based.

The khal leads the khalasar and its various khas. The khal is usually considered the strongest or fiercest of a khalasar; he must be a ruthless and cunning warrior to deal with any who challenge his authority or get in his way. It is said that if a khal cannot ride, he cannot lead.

Khals keep trusted companions and guards known as bloodriders, who follow the khal everywhere, even in death. If their khal falls in battle, the bloodriders live only long enough to avenge his death. They refer to each other as “Blood of my Blood” as a sign of respect and the closeness of their bond.

A khal's wife is called a khaleesi, while his heir to a khalasar is named the khalakka.^[1] When a khal dies, his khaleesi joins the dosh khaleen in Vaes Dothrak. Even the mightiest khals bow down before the authority and wisdom of the dosh khaleen.^[1]

• Khal {Drogo}, become khal at a young age and commanded the largest khalasar in his time.
• Khal Jhaqo, once ko to Drogo, now khal in his own right.
• Khal Pono, once ko to Drogo, now a khal of rising strength.
• Khal Moro, attended Daenerys Targaryen's presentation to Khal Drogo in Pentos.
• Khal Jommo, one of those who proclaimed Rhaego the stallion who mounts the world in Vaes Dothrak.
• Khal {Ogo}, also was at Vaes Dothrak. Later fought and was killed by Drogo in Lhazar.
  • Khal {Fogo}, son and khalakka of Ogo. Slain by Drogo just after his father's death.
• Khal Zekko, who periodically threatens Qohor.
• Khal Motho, an old khal with an aging khalasar.

Historical Khals

• Khal Temmo, who lost the Battle of the Three Thousand.
• Khal Onqo, who made incursions into the Ibbenese territories, only to be killed in a battle that utterly destroyed his khalasar.
  • Khal Dhako, known as the Dragon of the North, his grandson, who's khalasar was broken by the younger Khal Temmo, who took the elder captive and fed him to the flames after cutting off body parts and roasting them before his eyes, after first burning his wives and sons.
• Khal Zeggo, who sacked the city of Sarys, the last city of the Kingdom of Sarnor to fall to the Dothraki.
• Khal Loso, known as Loso the Lame, one of the four khals that fought in the Field of Crows. When the Sarnori pursued Khal Haro's feigned retreating riders, Loso's khalasar attacked from the rear. Less than a fortnight later, Loso sacked Sarnath and put the city to the torch.
• Khal Zhako, one of the four khals that fought in the Field of Crows. When the Sarnori pursued Khal Haro's feigned retreating riders, Zhako's khalasar attacked from the south.
• Khal Qano, one of the four khals that fought in the Field of Crows. When the Sarnori pursued Khal Haro's feigned retreating riders, Qano's khalasar attacked from the north.
• Khal Haro, one of the four khals that fought in the Field of Crows. When the Sarnori chariots smashed the centre of the Dothraki horde. Haro was trampled and killed, causing his khalasar to rout. However, the retreat was feigned. Haro's riders turned back on the pursuing Sarnori, raining arrows down on them, while the other khals surrounded the force on all sides.
• Khal Horro, who slew Khal Moro and took control of his khalasar, and daughter for himself. The last great khal.
• Khal Mengo, who united all Dothraki tribes and khalasars under his rule, becoming the first great khal.
  • Khal Moro, his son and the second great khal.
