History

SATO was launched in 2013. The business is part of LIXIL, an organisation founded in 2011 through the merger of five of Japan's most successful building materials and housing companies, and other international brands.[2] LIXIL operates as a global enterprise with approximately 65,000 employees in more than 150 countries worldwide. LIXIL's brands include, GROHE, American Standard and INAX.[2]

SATO launched the first Toilet pan in Bangladesh in January 2013. As of March 2023 SATO has operations in India, Bangladesh, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Philippines, and Indonesia.[3]

Purpose

SATO's purpose is to empower people everywhere to live a better life and enjoy a brighter future through innovative sanitation and hygiene solutions.[4] Applying customer understanding and design and engineering expertise they have created solutions that solve real problems that face emerging economies – from lack of toilets and taps to water scarcity affecting handwashing to unhygienic, unpleasant sanitation experiences.[4]

SATO aims to deliver on LIXIL's goal of improving the lives of 100 million people by 2025 with its sanitation and hygiene solutions.[2] As of May 2023, SATO has directly impacted more than 45 million lives across 44 countries across Africa, Asia, and South East Asia.[2]

SATO in Asia

Bangladesh was the first country where SATO was made available in 2013.[5] In 2016, SATO began selling its water-saving toilets in India.[6]

In 2020, SATO began manufacturing the SATO Tap in India.[7] In 2022, it launched the SATO Tap commercially in the country.[8]

SATO in Africa

As part of its School Toilet Enhancement Program, in 2022, SATO announced plans to upgrade toilets in 43 schools in Kenya, providing a clean, fresh, and safe learning environment for over 72,000 children.[9]

Partnerships

SATO has established partnerships with USAID and UNICEF aimed at increasing household access to sanitation and hygiene, encouraging the adoption of key hygiene and sanitation solutions through a market-based approach.[10]

SATO has also established a partnership with FINISH Mondial, aiming to improve access to safe sanitation and promote hygiene practices in low-income countries, to accelerate the achievement of SDG6 across Africa and South Asia.[11]

Products and services

SATO offers affordable, easy-to-use, and innovative product-based solutions, including the SATO Tap and SATO Toilet, that help people have a better life through improved access effective to sanitation and hygiene.[12]
