It is notably Missal's first independent release, following her former label Harvest Records dropping her in 2022, a month after the release of her In The Mirror, In The Night EP.[4] The album was largely inspired by this experience, with Missal exploring themes of mental stability and liberation. The album also marks a sonic shift towards dance-pop, having previously released pop rock on her albums This Time and Lighter.
Revel was supported by the singles "Flicker"[5] and "Out of Me".[6]
Background and release
Missal released her In The Mirror, In The Night EP via Harvest Records in February 2022.[7] She explained that during the making of the EP, she learned to record herself and became more involved with the visual aspects of the project. The EP was also made largely in collaboration with Irish-Scottish music producer Sega Bodega.[8] In The Mirror, In The Night saw Missal exploring more of a electronic palette, and was a sonic shift away from her music prior.
In March 2022, Missal shared that she had been dropped by her record label. She wrote about her retrospective thoughts on the music industry, and the difficulties she was facing in continuing to pursue music as a career as an independent artist.[4][9] She later appeared on Kacy Hill's Kinda Jaded podcast in 2023 to talk about the situation in further detail.[10] Missal spent the year recording Revel, as well as training her body to dance, documenting her experience. She stated that dancing and movement became a tool for pushing through the hardships she'd been facing, and made her a stronger because of it.[11][12] Inspirations for the music of album include Frou Frou, Radiohead, Massive Attack, and Robyn, as well as Lady Gaga's Artpop, and Madonna's Ray of Light albums.[13]
Missal released "Flicker" as the lead single for Revel in March 2023,[5] followed by "Out of Me" a month after, announcing the album officially the same day.[6][1][2][3] Missal will perform songs from Revel live in July 2023 in Los Angeles and New York.[14]
